As much I love the meditational benefits of making pour over coffee, some busy mornings require that I just hit ‘brew’ and come back when it’s done with a coffee maker. I was tasked to do hours of research on coffee makers online, not just any coffee makers, but one makes coffee as close to a pour over coffee as possible. I know what you’re thinking, machines are slowly taking our jobs, even making coffee. I ordered 5 pour over style automatic coffee makers for use in our office that will withstand the use and abuse of developers that need coffee for fuel.
Top picks for the Best Pour Over Coffee Machine
Top choices and recommended drip / pour over coffee makers. Coffee makers listed below have either been used or currently being used by pourovercoffee.co. We rated the automatic coffee makers based on the following criteria: Build quality, price, coffee taste, ease of use and reliability. Our office is located in a co-working space with a shared kitchen, so I knew I had to get a coffee maker that will be the office workhorse. After a few weeks of coffee brewing and tasting, our office voted on two coffee makers out of five, if you’re interested in which two, keep reading! Technivorm 79112 KBT Coffee Brewer, 40 oz
Technivorm 79112 KBT is a workhorse in our office and it has helped code many pieces of software! Makes coffee from 7:00 AM in the morning to 6:00 PM in the afternoon, all day several times a day. We use this coffee maker in conjunction with the Baratza Encore coffee grinder and it makes some of the best automatic coffees around. The unit itself is extremely well built, very simple to operate and best of all it can make a full 10 cup carafe of coffee in about 6 minutes, take that manual pour over! I can’t say enough great things about this coffee maker, but it does have some quirks that you have to know before buying one. This coffee maker is about as ‘manual’ as an automatic coffee maker can get. There are no automatic timers to schedule a brew, electronic clocks, fancy Wi-Fi or app controller. It simply makes great-tasting coffee. Technivorm is also very well know in the coffee maker industry, they have a monster 5-year warranty on this product which is unheard of. Normally a one year warranty is standard, and maybe 3 years for parts. But the 5-year warranty is HARD to beat for a coffee maker. It’s worth noting that this coffee isn’t actually listed as ‘pour over style’ coffee maker but still makes a great coffee for an automatic maker that’s fairly close to a pour over.
Technivorm 79112 KBT: Pros
- Excellent build quality
- Superb tasting coffee
- Full Carafe in 6 minutes
- Manufacturer Warranty
- Simplicity / Ease of Use
Technivorm 79112 KBT: Cons
- No infusion mode
Motif Essential Pour-Over Style Coffee Brewer
There’s a lot to love about the Motif Essential Pour Over Style Coffee brewer, from thoughtful design, high-quality construction, and price point. We tested the Motif Essential for a couple of weeks in our office, and eventually just returned it before 30 days was up. The issue that we can across was the brew cycle audible indicator stopped working, this was a minor annoyance at best, but there’s no reason this part should fail on a coffee maker less than 30 days old. The reason this coffee maker still made the list is that during our testing, it consistently produced crisp, clean & smooth coffee, this alone made the Motif Essential be on our top 5. Pre-infusion mode allows the coffee to bloom for better extraction no doubt plays a role in producing better coffee with this unit. However, there were times when it also under-extracted and essentially produced a sour-tasting coffee or bland. We get our beans from the same roaster every month, they just send us what we need, so I don’t think this was an issue with low quality coffee beans. Under extraction has also been reported by other users online if you do a little bit of research on this product. Another downside was coffee temperature after brewing a full carafe consistently produced less than 180F full pot of coffee, this could be better. The brew temp itself was perfectly fine, consistently in the perfect range of 195F – 200F. The Motif Essential is a great buy for the price you’re getting a superb pour over style coffee maker, however, Motif / Bonavita (parent company) just needs to tighten up their quality control and all these issues will go away eventually.
Motif Essential: Pros
- Capable of crisp, clean & smooth brews
- Pre-Infusion Mode
- Decalcification Indicator
- Dishwasher safe parts
- Brew-Thru Lid
Motif Essential: Cons
- Construction Quality & Quality Control
- Some under-extraction
- Customer Support is lacking
BRIM Maker764 Pour Over Style Coffee Maker
The Brim Maker764 was a mixed bag of emotions for the office when we tested it. While the coffee tasted really good and the price point wasn’t bad, but it had a very strong plastic smell when brewing. Even after 8+ cleaning cycles, the plastic smell was still there. After about 12+ cleaning cycles, the smell eventually went away, but I think the entire office was already put off by the time the Brim 764 got rid of the chemical smell. Another point I noticed while we had the Brim Maker in our office was how thin the glass carafe was, I had some concerns if the carafe would even last a year, it felt like it would break at any moment. After the chemical smell, thin carafe, the coffee maker did produce really good pour over coffee. We used the office go-to, Baratza Encore on the medium grind setting and Brim Maker 764 it consistently produced good coffee. Again this unit like the Motif Essential has pre-infusion mode prior to full brew, really did a great job extracting flavors from our local roaster.
BRIM Maker 764: Pros
- Acceptable Price Point
- Good tasting pour over
- Fast Brew
- Ease of use
- Pre-Infusion Mode
BRIM Maker 764: Cons
- Awful plastic smell
- Thin Carafe
- Takes up a lot of countertop space
Technivorm Moccamaster 53955
The Moccamaster 53955 is the big brother to the Technivorm 79112 KBT. The Moccamaster 53955 version has a couple more great features, but also cost a lot more than the KBT. This won’t be as lengthy as the other write-up, they are essentially the same coffee machine, both produce amazing tasting coffee. Solid construction, and great design. This version has two buttons, one for a brew and the other for the hot plate. This is a superb product.
Moccamaster 53955: Pro
- Excellent construction
- Elegant design
- Comes in multi-color version
- Super coffee produced
- Legendary Warranty
- Simplicity / Ease of Use
- Separate ON/OFF switches for plate and brew
- Automatic Brew Basket – can remove mid-brew to pour a cup
Moccamaster 53955: Cons
- No pre-infusion
I was pretty excited to try out the Redline MK1 in our office and I had high hopes that this product would perform well. The reviews online on the Redline MK1 was largely positive, so after setting and a few clean cycles, the MK1 did not disappoint! It produced, crisp, clean and delicious coffee on medium grind/roast. For 1/3 of the cost a Technivorm, the Redline MK1 will give any Mocchamaster a run for its money, hands down one of the best value coffee makers out there currently. The water in the brew basket consistently produced perfect temperature for optimal brewing, and it also features pre-infusion something the Moccamaster does not do. If you’re on a budget, but in the market for a great pour over style coffee maker that’s easy on the wallet, this product is worth a look. If you’re not into $300 USD coffee makers but you’re into a great coffee, this product is for you. MK1 has thoughtful design features that are found on more expensive coffee makers, such as ‘hand-brake’ for a mid-brew pour, infusion and superb temperature control.
Redline MK1: Pros
- Great tasting coffee
- Material Quality
- Temperature control
- Ease of Use
Redline MK1: Cons
- None for the price
Conclusion & Final Thoughts
The office had fun testing out a bunch of coffee machines for primary use. Honestly, we could do this all year, considering everyone at work loves coffee, this was like opening up a new toy each week and testing coffee. It was a great excuse to take a break and make coffee, not that we normally need any excuses. In the end, the vote was overwhelmingly for Technivorm 79112 KBT, we now have two of these gorgeous coffee makers in the office making coffee all day every day. The office also voted for the Redline MK1, it was such a great coffee maker, it really surprised a lot of people in the office that it compared to the Technivorm so well. We ended up buying two Technivorm Model 79112, it really came down to superb customer support and legendary warranty. We make a lot of coffee if the machine broke in the next couple of years, we can just get replacement parts and Technivorm has been around for ages. I don’t want to sell the Redline MK1 short, it was also loved after all, but Redline has truly made a superb product worth taking a look at.
